He is credited with the exploration of the valley of Virginia from Orange County to the southwest area of the state. He appears in a great many Augusta Co, VA records. In 1740, he was Justice of the County Courthouse, and Captain of the local militia who protected settlers from Indians. In 1745, he was appointed Magistrate by the Governor of Virginia. In July 1746, he became the Commissioner of the New Court. He also assisted with the building and repairing of county roads. He was a member of the Loyal Land Company. The Loyal Land Company grant was in the spring of 1745 issued to several Augusta men and the surveying began March 1746. 100,000 acres of land, called "Woods River Grant" (later "New River") was granted to the members of the Company. Their task was to sell the land to settlers - they had four years to do so. In 1753 the grant was renewed. In November 1755, George headed a company of processioners.
